Start your journey into synthesis with a free (yes free) soundset for a straightforward and reliable synth. Onset for Tal Noisemaker is your gateway into synthesis. A soundset that straddles ambient/downtempo/psychill, it can easily be repurposed for a variety of genres.
Onset consists of 45 patches sorted by category using TAL prefixes. Warm creamy pads meet subsonic basses, interspersed with delicate plucks and glistening keys. You will also find inspiring sequences, vivid arps, and a handful of FX and drums. As always, every patch has a few dB of headroom reserved. Tal Noisemaker uses the pitch wheel (instead of the modwheel) for hands on control and every patch has this assignment, as well as velocity. Please note that Noisemaker does not support aftertouch. The use of pitchwheel instead of the traditional modwheel can yield some interesting results due to it having a bipolar effect instead of unipolar – good for experimenting with!
If you are unfamiliar with Tal Noisemaker, it is worth seeking out, especially if you are new to synthesis. A virtual analog synth with traditional waveshapes (saw, pulse, sine, triangle) up to 6 voices, a subtractive signal path and a simple but robust feature set – it has everything one needs to learn synthesis without any extraneous additions. It is a synth often recommended to beginners. However, those with more experience should give it a serious second look as it can hold its own among a crowded field of synths – plus its free! Tal Noisemaker can be downloaded here.
